Why blue has never once fallen out of favour


Blue is the colour we reach for when we mean distance. Sky, water, depth, the far edge of things. It is the one colour the eye reads as infinite, and the earth is remarkably reluctant to make it. Blue flowers are uncommon. Blue creatures are mostly a trick of light. Blue stone, of real depth and real permanence, is rarer still.

Which may be why the sapphire has never once fallen out of favour in three thousand years of being worn. It has outlasted every fashion that tried to claim it. It is not a trend. It is closer to a constant.
And to choose one is to answer a question most people never think to ask: what do you believe endures?


Dear to Saturn
Ask the Persians why the sky is blue and they will tell you the earth is resting on a sapphire. Not near one. On one. Everything above your head is the reflection.
That is the scale of what was once believed about this stone. People behaved accordingly.
The Greeks wore it to Delphi, on the reasonable principle that one does not put a question to the gods unprotected. Rome wore it against envy, the ancient world's most feared weapon, and the only one you never saw coming. By the Middle Ages the Church had made it official: sapphire became the ring of episcopal office. Blue for heaven, worn on the hand that blesses.
Kings kept it nearer still. A sapphire was thought to draw the sting from poison, which was no small consideration at a table where the food arrived from people you had every reason to distrust. It was also said to reveal betrayal, worn by someone false, the colour would go dull. An entire court, read from a single ring.
And in India it was neelam, Saturn's gem, and the most feared of the nine sacred stones. Not because it was unlucky. Because it was fast. Fortune or ruin, delivered inside a week. Which is why it was the one gem nobody simply bought. You wore it on trial. If the week went badly, you sent it back.
The word carries the same lineage. Sapphire comes down through Latin and Greek and Hebrew, and behind all of them, most likely, the Sanskrit shani-priya - dear to Saturn. For centuries the Greeks used it for lapis lazuli instead. The name is older than the stone it now belongs to.
One fragment of that old order survives, largely unnoticed. Stones were assigned to months, and September drew the sapphire. 
Most people meet the sapphire as September's birthstone.
Long before that, it was Saturn's gem, worn to Delphi, set into the bishop's ring, believed to draw the sting from poison and to dull in colour on anyone who lied.
This exceptional gemstone is as ancient as the stars, worn and honoured for centuries.  
September is the month the Sapphire landed. 

An accident of extraordinary precision
Left to itself, corundum is colourless. Clear, unremarkable, hard enough to scratch nearly anything the earth has made, and entirely without interest.
What makes a sapphire is a visitation. A trace of chromium wanders into the crystal lattice and the stone turns red; we call it a ruby. Iron and titanium arrive instead, and the stone turns blue. The quantities are fractions of a percent - an accident so fine it would be a rounding error anywhere else in nature, and it is the whole of the difference.
A hundred million years of heat and pressure, and then a few atoms in the right place. That is what you are holding.

What the trade means by blue
Ask a gemmologist to describe a sapphire and she will not say blue. She will say cornflower, or royal, or with a slight cooling of enthusiasm - inky.
Cornflower is the pale, lit-from-within tone the Kashmir stones made famous. Royal is deeper and more saturated, the blue most of us picture when the word is spoken. Past that the colour begins to close in on itself, tipping toward midnight and then toward black, and value falls away as the stone stops giving light back.
Almost every sapphire carries some trace of a second colour, usually green or violet. There is no number that settles this - no percentage at which a stone stops being blue. The laboratories simply describe what they see, and they choose their words with great care: slightly greenish blue, violetish blue, blue. An entire grade can turn on a single adverb.
Which is why a sapphire has to be looked at rather than looked up. Rarity here is not a threshold to be cleared. It is a judgement made by eye - and the fewer qualifiers a stone's description needs, the rarer the stone.

A stone you live in
Here is something the auction catalogues rarely dwell on. This one, you can actually wear.
Sapphire sits at 9 on the Mohs scale, nearer to diamond than to anything else the earth makes. But hardness is only half of it. Diamond is harder, and yet diamond has cleavage - planes along which it will part cleanly if it is struck the wrong way. Sapphire has none at all, and its toughness is excellent besides.
That combination, far more than the number, is what sets it apart. Emerald is fragile and knows it. Paraiba is precious in the literal sense - handled, admired, returned to its box. A sapphire is another proposition entirely. It survives hands and doors and decades. It survives being loved carelessly.
Which changes what it can become. A stone kept in a safe is an asset. A stone worn every day for forty years is something else - it gathers up the life it is worn through, and it still arrives at the next generation looking exactly like itself.
Origin carries a weight in sapphire that has no equal elsewhere in coloured stone, and the reason is as much historical as geological. The great sources were found in sequence, and each one set the terms by which the next would be judged.
Sri Lanka is the constant. Ceylon for most of its trading life, it has produced without serious interruption for something close to two thousand years, and it still offers the widest range of colour of any source on earth. Almost every generation of collectors has had access to it. Very little else in this trade can say the same.
Myanmar yields far less, but what it yields is often larger and more deeply saturated, and priced to match. Madagascar is the modern arrival, producing only since the 1990s, and its material is exceptionally clean - it became one of the most important sources in the world while the trade was still deciding whether to take it seriously. Australia holds significant deposits of its own, and in the black sapphire a material found in quantity almost nowhere else.
And Kashmir gave up the finest blue anyone has seen, then closed within about five years of being found. The slopes are guarded still. Nothing comparable has ever been discovered.
Read the sequence end to end and it describes a subtraction. A significant new source appears roughly once a century, and not one of them has ever replaced what came before. They have only extended the supply of what remains.

A promise, and why it is usually blue
Somewhere in that long inheritance, the sapphire quietly became the stone of promises. Faithfulness is the virtue it has carried longest, and the one it has never been asked to give up.
Its modern romantic life was secured in 1981, when a twelve-carat oval Ceylon sapphire ringed with diamonds was chosen for a British royal engagement - a piece taken, unusually, from an existing catalogue rather than commissioned. It passed to a second generation in 2010, and it is now very likely the most recognised engagement ring in the world.
That lineage explains why sapphire endures while other stones move in and out of favour. It has never been asked to mean novelty. It has always been asked to mean permanence - which is precisely why it keeps being chosen by people writing their own story rather than repeating everyone else's.

One thing worth knowing
Most sapphire sold in this world has been gently heated - an ancient practice, and an accepted one. It deepens colour and clears haze, and a heated sapphire can be a lovely thing to own.
A stone that has never been heated is simply rarer. It came out of the ground already looking the way it looks, and the market has always recognised that. The distinction is settled in a laboratory rather than by eye, which is why a serious sapphire travels with paper, and why the report is worth reading before the gem is admired.
It is the one piece of knowledge that separates a beautiful sapphire from a collectible one. Everything else about the stone, you can see for yourself.

What diamonds do for blue
A sapphire alone is a colour. Set it against diamonds and it becomes a contrast, and contrast is what the eye actually reads. Glacial white fire beside something deep and unhurried; brilliance against saturation; cool against cool, but at opposite ends of the same idea. Each stone makes the other more of what it already is.
It is an old pairing and a durable one, and it is one this house returns to constantly - a cushion-cut Ceylon held in a spray of baguettes, pears and marquises; a vivid Madagascan centre ringed with tapered diamond; blue baguettes running the length of a chain. The diamonds are never decoration arranged around the gem. They are the reason you can see it properly.

Why the clasp was blue
In 2001, Stefano Canturi was commissioned to make a necklace for Nicole Kidman in Moulin Rouge! 1,308 diamonds, 134 carats, built around a five-carat emerald cut. "Satine" entered the Guinness World Records as the most valuable piece of jewellery ever created for a film.
The clasp could have been anything. Another diamond, to match. Any stone he cared to name. He chose a 2.5-carat cabochon Sri Lankan blue sapphire.
A clasp sits at the back of the neck. On screen it would scarcely be seen at all. It was the only colour on the entire piece, and the only element the brief left him free to decide - which is exactly why it tells you more than the other 1,308 stones do. Handed the most photographed jewel he would ever make, he spent his one open choice on the part the camera would never find.
That instinct has not changed. The sapphires held here now are untreated, and their origin and treatment are disclosed as a matter of course rather than on request. Set in 18ct gold or platinum, shaped by a design language that has never much cared for decoration, a Canturi sapphire is not made for a season. It is made for whoever comes after you.

What the earth once made
There is no shortage of beautiful things to buy. There is a real shortage of beautiful things that will still be beautiful, and still be yours, in eighty years.
The earth made this colour reluctantly and made very little of it. The source that produced the finest of it fell silent within five years and has never been matched since. What is above ground is what there is, and nothing is being added to it.
So the choice was never really between one blue stone and another. It is between something admired now, and something that goes on quietly answering for you long after the admiring is done. A sapphire chosen carefully is not a decision you will find yourself defending - not in five years, and not in fifty.
You will never need to explain it. In every light, for as long as anyone is looking, it will go on explaining itself.

What to ask before you buy a collector-grade sapphire:

> What does "collector grade" actually mean?
Less than it should, most of the time. It is trade language rather than a regulated classification, and no authority issues it, which means the phrase is only ever as good as the person using it. Used seriously, it describes a stone that is untreated, certified by a recognised laboratory with an origin opinion attached, and of a colour whose saturation holds evenly through the gem. Every one of those can be verified on paper. If a stone is described to you as collector grade and the claim cannot be broken back into those parts, the words are being used as an adjective rather than a standard.

> What does the report actually say about treatment?
Look for the phrase no indications of heating. A laboratory will not write unheated, because what it can honestly report is the absence of evidence rather than the presence of a negative. Ask to see the report itself rather than a summary of it, and note which laboratory issued it - the opinions of the major Swiss houses carry more weight in the market than others, and that difference follows the stone on resale.

> Does origin genuinely affect value, or is it sentiment?
Both, and it is worth being clear-eyed about the proportions. Origin does correlate with real physical character - the structural inclusions behind Kashmir's velvet, the saturation typical of Burmese material. But two stones of near-identical appearance from different sources can trade at meaningfully different prices, and some of that gap is market convention rather than optics. You are paying for it either way. You should know which part.

> Why do laboratories sometimes disagree about origin?
Because origin is inferred, not observed. It is read from trace element chemistry and inclusion patterns, and those signatures overlap between deposits that formed under similar conditions. Two competent laboratories can reach different conclusions about the same stone. On a significant purchase, a second opinion is ordinary practice rather than an act of suspicion.

> How is colour judged when there is no universal scale?
Coloured stone has no equivalent to the D-to-Z scale used for diamonds. Judgement rests on hue, tone and saturation, assessed by eye against reference material, and trade terms like cornflower and royal describe ranges rather than grades. This is exactly why a sapphire must be seen rather than specified — and seen in more than one light, since blue is the colour most altered by a warm interior bulb.

> How does size change the calculation?
Rarity does not rise in step with weight. Untreated material of fine colour is uncommon above three carats and genuinely scarce beyond five, and price per carat moves in steps rather than along a curve. A five-carat stone is not five times a one-carat stone. It is a different market.

> Is a Madagascan stone a lesser thing than a Ceylon?
No - and the assumption that it is has cost buyers a great deal of money. Madagascar has been producing since the 1990s and yields material of exceptional clarity and colour; some of the finest blues trading today came out of it. Origin prestige lags origin quality by a generation or more, which now and then works in a buyer's favour.

> How should a sapphire be looked after?
Lightly, and not often. Warm water, a drop of mild soap, a soft cloth. Store it apart from your other pieces in something fabric-lined, since a stone this hard will mark anything it is kept beside. Keep it away from perfume, lotion and chlorinated water. That is genuinely the whole of it - a sapphire asks less of you than almost anything else you will own.
